Guinness Cork Jazz Festival
The Guinness Jazz Festival takes place in the intimate and charming city of Cork on the scenic coast of the south of Ireland during the last weekend of October each year (a holiday weekend in Ireland). 2002 is the 25th year of the Festival, which is Ireland's largest jazz event. This years Festival will be the biggest yet featuring over 100 bands and 700 musicians from 25 countries. There is jazz on tap, day & night, for 4 days - using the Everyman Palace Theatre, the Gresham Metropole Hotel, the Cork Opera House, the Triskel Arts Cente, the new Guinness Jazz Pavilion and over 50 other clubs, pubs and fringe venues. All the principal venues are within easy walking distance, making for a terrific Festival atmosphere. Admission is free of charge to 90% of the music sessions citywide. The Festival attracts 40,000 visitors to the city - is one of the biggest Festival sponsorships in the Guinness portfolio in Ireland - and one of the biggest arts events in the country. It is renowned as Europe's friendliest jazz festival. Over the years, the Festival has featured many of the 'greats' of jazz including Art Blakey, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Sonny Rollins, Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, Gerry Mulligan, Dave Brubeck, George Shearing, Joe Lovano, Ahmad Jamal, Johnny Griffin, Elvin Jones, Michael Brecker, Jim Hall and Kenny Garrett.
